Splitting pills can cut the cost of medicines in half. Is it safe?
"As drug costs soar, consumers and insurers are taking a new look at the time-honored but controversial practice of pill-splitting, which capitalizes on the fact that bigger-dose pills of many drugs often sell for the same price or only slightly more than smaller dose pills."
The article goes on to say that pill splitting is not without risks. A recent study of 11 commonly split tablets found that eight of them were difficult to split accurately.
For the past four years, Florida's Medicaid program has required patients who take 50-milligram Zoloft or 10-milligram Paxil to split their pills. In the first year of the practice, the agency estimated it saved about $4 million.
