Pill Splitting Experiment Saves South Dakota Plan Money
Last fall approximately 400 members of the State’s Health Plan who used maintenance levels of Lipitor, Zocor and Zoloft prescription medications were asked to consult with their physician and if appropriate, purchase a larger dosage of those medications and split the pill, thus reducing the number of pills purchased in half. A pill splitter was provided.
With Lipitor, Zocor and Zoloft, three popular drugs, a savings of $600 per year, per participant is achieved by splitting larger dose pills.
During the first three months of the program, 150 members participated which resulted in an estimated annual pharmacy savings of $90,000; enough to pay for a kidney transplant or approximately eight hospitalizations.
