This long and thorough article discusses several examples of insurance companies and group health organizations that are promoting pill splitting in order to save money on prescription drugs.

But some patients are resisting the programs because they say they cannot accurately and consistently split tablets. Pharmacists are also worried that success might lead to mandatory splitting for patients who are too old or otherwise not capable.

Advocates of the program point out that splitting tablets may allow individuals who do not have prescription drug benefits to afford medicine that they otherwise could not afford.
